Week 13: Coastal Hazards

Anyone who lives along the coast should consider the risks of flooding, rising sea levels, and erosion. Australia's coast is at risk due to a rise in sea levels is a threat we will constantly face. Australia is the country most affected by beach erosion. Australia has around 11,426 kilometers of coastline that face risk. More than 40% of beaches are at risk of being lost. Coastal environments have been affected by pressure such as extreme weather and human development. Coastal floods will increasingly occur due to smaller storm surges and ties alone under average oceanographic conditions. Cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth have been affected by flooding.

People must be aware of the government meteorological organizations and stay tuned to warning protocols. Australian citizens should carefully consider insurance that covers weather hazards that include flooding. NGIS has developed a tool to help people visualize how their homes and neighbors can be affected by a weather hazard.

  1. Wow! Australia is at risk of losing 7100 miles of coastline. I honestly think it is time that climate change and funding into the environment should be prioritized. It is time that land use of the shoreline needs to be examined. Saving lives is more important than a better view than your neighbor. I read one of the articles that you cited and it said that dredging and seawalls have contributed to the erosion. I find that very interesting. My country, Iceland has very strong waves that are brutal and cause erosion, but because of so much tectonic activity there is uplift that slows down the coastal flooding. Wow, thanks for a great post.

  2. Hey Alejanda!
That is such an astonishing number to think about. 40 percent of all beaches are at risk of being lost! That almost sounds unimaginable and to think that some of the biggest cities in Australia are at the most risk of being a part of that 40 percent. Rising sea levels are not just affecting Australia, they are affected nearly every country and coastal towns all over the world.
